SECOND EDITION. Octavo. [4], viiii, 246,6 pp. Engraved frontispiece folding plan of Newcastle. Book Condition: Very Good. Half calf over marbled paper-covered boards. Boards rubbed to edge with minor loss to paper at front joint and sympathetically professionally re-spined in calf with five raised bands, black leather title label and gilt-stamped titles & line decoration. The damascene boards bear the text from a Weekly Return table of Sick & Wounded soldiers at His Majesty's Regimental Hospital. Sporadic light foxing ; small wormhole through prelims and frontis to pp4 and another to rear board and margin of adjacent leaves. Signature of former owner JE Jobling to ffep with his initials to front pastedown and occasional ink stains; Table of Mayors to pp 246 annotated with additional records from 1759-1765. Originally published in 1736 with identical title page, but with blank p 246; this edition has title page dated 1736, text to p 246, catchword An to p245, and the "Of the Government of the Town" chapter covers up to 1757. List of Subscribers. The first printing of 1736 had a print run of only 300 copies, Bourne laboured upon it right up until his death; “the perplexities of authorship bore so heavily upon him that he fell ill. Still he worked on” and the book was published posthumously for the benefit of his family. Scarce, particularly with the plan of the city which is often lacking. Welford, vol I, pp., 353-357.
