Biography of George Granville Leveson-Gower, Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833) , notorious for the Highland Clearances carried out in his name by the Author (the Duke's agent) when the local crofters were unwillingly relocated to coastal areas to make way for more profitable sheep. The Duke was one of the richest men in Great Britain with extensive landholdings in Staffordshire and other areas of England as well as Sutherland. Subject matter covers the genealogy of the family as well as the life of the Duke and includes a detailed report on his funeral, the Address of Condolence presented to the new Duke, and lists of the subscribers to each of the monuments erected in the Duke's memory.
