Undated [c.1925]. Oblong quarto. 73 captioned photogravure illustrations to 50 thick card plates (complete). Book Condition: Very Good. Publishers’ original faux crocodile skin with cord ties in the style of a photograph album, with gilt titles to upper board. Brown endpapers with publishers’ ticket to rear pastedown. Housed in original card slipcase. Covers rubbed to edge with bump to upper corner of lower board, also affecting margin of 7 final leaves. 1-inch tear to margin of single plate (image unaffected) and 3-inch tear to slipcase. Name and address of former owner to slipcase; case surface soiled and worn but has protected the book very well.
A fascinating glimpse into the inter-war period, with many images featuring the people of Iraq going about their daily work and business. Subjects incude archaeological sites like the Tallisin Tower in Baghdad, street and market scenes in Mosul, local tribesmen and a 10-year-old Chadean bride in traditional costume. Scarce, especially in this condition.
