Originally published 1736 with identical title page but with the final leaf of “Of the Government of the Town” running up to 1757. The earliest attempt at a comprehensive history of the town and the basis for Brand’s history 40 years later. The first printing of 1736 had a print run of only 300 copies, Bourne laboured upon it right up until his death “the perplexities of authorship bore so heavily upon him that he fell ill. Still he worked on” and the book was published posthumously for the benefit of his family. Scarce, particularly with the plan of the city which is often lacking. Welford, volume I, pp., 353-357.
