FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp 79. 2 colour plates plus line drawings in text by Pauline Baynes. Light orange cloth with blue titles to spine and dragon motif to upper board, in price clipped pictorial white-and-gold dust-jacket. Top edge stained pale blue; dragon-patterned endpapers. Light foxing & toning, mainly to endpapers and textblock edge. No annotation or inscriptions. Jacket nicked & creased with minor loss at corners and top edge, a couple of 1-inch closed tears, and browned adhesive tape repairs to reverse. A Very Good copy in Good jacket.
 
A good example of Tolkien’s “English Mythology” classic featuring the encounters between Farmer Giles and the dragon Chrysophylax, set in the imaginary Dark Ages.
