Six superb lithographed maps, ALL HAND-COLOURED IN OUTLINE with approximate image size of 810 mm x 1060 mm. Scale 2 and 1/2 inches to a Mile. Maps 1, 3, 4 & 5 all uniform, dissected into 20 sections, laid on linen and folding into cloth portfolio lettered in gilt to upper cover ”Royalty Plan 1st Series” etc; Maps 2 & 6 dissected into 32 sections laid on linen and folded into: 2nd later black morocco covers with gilt titles to spine and upper board “Plan of Part of the Tyne & Wear Coal Districts...” ; 6th in contemporary pebbled cloth lettered in gilt to upper cover ”Royalty Plan No 6...”. A little scattered foxing & toning, mainly to linen. Minor soiling & scuffing to cover cloth of 4 uniform volumes with dated ownership inscription of County Durham mine manager John Ridley Ritson of Burnhope Colliery in County Durham to Map 5. Ritson graduated with a First Class Certificate of Competency as a Mine Manager in 1895, the year he inscribed the map. Overall a Very Good set.
 
John Bell was a Novocastrian civil engineer and surveyor and his superb series of plans cover the entirety of the Northumberland and Durham coal field and are an invaluable source of information on the railways and collieries of the area. Rare as a complete set.
