Sir John Coode, the British engineer, was consulted by governments worldwide for his expertise and is widely considered to be the finest harbour engineer of the nineteenth century. The highly detailed and decorative series of plans here show his proposed scheme for improving the River Tyne to make it more easily navigable for shipping.
