With three and a half leaves of manuscript poetry bound-in to rear. 46 illustrations to plates including frontispiece with tissue guard, many with 2 illustrations per plate, plus numerous sketches and plans within text. Full tree calf by Bumpus of Oxford Street with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to spine and decoration to compartments, and gilt scrolled fillet to boards; aeg; gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. Spine lightly sunned and lower board a little scuffed. Ownership signature of Walter Ingram Chapman, the Author’s brother, to first blank, and three and a half pages of poetry by him tipped-in at the end of the book. Also an annotation by Abel Chapman himself to p. 77, referring to the Kori Bustard. A Near Fine copy in a particularly handsome binding.
Walter Ingram Chapman accompanied his brother Abel on the Safari to Equatorial Africa that is the subject of this book, a Big Game Hunting and natural history account with much of the content about lion and elephant hunting. His subject of his manuscript poetry is the journey towards ‘Baringo’ and the subsequent encounters with big game.
