FIRST EDITION. Octavo, xviii, 301, [1]. Publishers’ decorative blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and stylised angel motifs to sine and upper board. Cover cloth rubbed, and lightly tone to spine; a slightly shaken copy with weak inner front hinge. Scattered light foxing, heavier to endpapers; leaves lightly soiled, particularly to edge; newspaper clipping of “Lord Dufferin’s Ghost Story” to front paste-down and pencilled initials to ffep. A Good copy.
An eclectic anthology of ghost-lore, the paranormal, visions and hauntings by the Scottish writer and anthropologist Andrew Lang (1844-1912) best known for his collections of folk and fairy tales. Over seventy outre occurrences from poltergeists in China to haunted Border Reiver castles, all compiled by Lang and attesting to his firmly held belief in the paranormal. Lang was fascinated by the subject and was President of the Society of Psychical Research in 1911. Scare.
