Early reprint. Octavo, pp. iv, 211, [9] catalogue. 38 full page plates, and vignette to title page. Publishers’ pictorial terracotta cloth with titles in gilt to spine, and in black to upper board; castle blocked in black and blue inside border to upper board. A clean copy with no annotation or inscriptions. Boards lightly surface soiled and gilt a little dull; corners bruised and spine tips rubbed. Endpapers toned.
The tale of mysterious events at the castle is believed to have influenced Bram Stoker, who published “Dracula” just a few years later. Variously titled in translation, the story is also published as “Carpathian Castle” and “The Castle in Transylvania”, and was originally published in French in 1892.
