Illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson including head-pieces, vignette to title-page, frontispiece with tissue guard, and exquisite line drawings, many of which are full page. Publishers’ decorative cloth with gilt titles and floral motifs to spine, and the heroine sitting under a tree to upper board, all blocked in gilt. Spine tips a little creased and gilt to spine very slightly rubbed. Ownership inscription in ink to ffep dated 1905; scattered light foxing, mainly to prelims and upper margin, otherwise contents clean with no annotation. A very good copy in a handsome binding.
With an Introduction by Austin Dobson. Burney’s first novel, originally published anonymously in 1778, an epistolary coming-of-age story set in English aristocratic society, which was critically well received. This edition is greatly enhanced by the many detailed drawings by Thomson.
