Publishers’ bevelled deep green cloth with titles in gilt to spine and gilt axe-head motif to upper board; quadruple borders to boards, in black to upper and in blind to lower board. Cover cloth lightly rubbed with very minor wear at corners. Contents clean; no annotation or inscriptions. A Very Good copy.
For many years this was the standard work on the subject and is now scarce, particularly in this condition (the majority of available copies today being ex-library). Sir John Evans (1823-1908) was a distinguished archaeologist and numismatist,President of the Society of Antiquaries and a trustee of the British Museum; much of his archaeological collection was left to the Ashmolean Museum, and his books to the Bodleian Library. Contents include sickles, bells, jewellery and trumpets as well as swords, helmets and axes. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
