N.d. - circa 1870. Octavo, pp. xviii, , 1020; , 1094. Binding by John Leighton, with JL initials embossed in gilt incorporated into design on the upper board. Bevelled green cloth-covered boards blocked in gilt to spine and upper boards, with central swans-neck lyre design inside arabesque around “Shakespeare” and surrounding fillets with foliate and floral motifs. Spine heavily decorated in gilt around titles, with “Family Edition” at tail. Lower boards decorated in blind design to match upper boards, around a central crest of a sailing ship motif inside strapwork bearing the legend “Town of Greenock Academy”. Aeg. Cover cloth rubbed to edge with minor wear to lower corners and spine tips; both volumes slightly shaken. Volume I just starting at top edge lower joint, with 5 cm central split to upper joint and weak inner front hinge. Inner front hinge Volume II cracked but firm; a couple of gatherings standing proud of text-block (without being loose). A Good set.
