FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. viii, 371, [1]. Colour frontispiece with tissue guard plus 12 numbered captioned monochrome plates, as called for. Publishers’ blue cloth with black titles to spine. Spine slightly toned; upper corners bumped and spine tips rubbed with small nick head of spine. Bold ownership inscription to ffep otherwise contents clean. A Very Good copy.
Previously unpublished travel account by Julian Huxley’s grandfather Thomas Henry Huxley, written during the late 1840s and 1850. Huxley was a British biologist sailing as Assistant Surgeon on the Rattlesnake on an exploratory voyage around Australia and New Guinea; Huxley studied jellyfish, portuguese man-of-war and molluscs amongst other specimens, and posted scientific articles back to England for publication,papers which made his reputation as a marine biologist and led to his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851.
