Napier’s influential eyewitness account of the Napoleonic Wars, for many years the standard work on the subject. William Patrick Francis Napier (1785-1860), soldier and historian, wrote his history partly to defend the reputation of his former chief Sir John Moore, to ensure that Moore’s reputation was not totally overshadowed by that of the Duke of Wellington.
