Full diced calf with blind foliate border to boards inside double gilt border, gilt titles and decoration to spine and gilt dentelles; all edges marbled with matching marbled endpapers. Minor wear to corners and edge very slightly scuffed. Engraved armorial bookplate of Norman Ritchie to each front paste-down; marginal ruling and annotation in pencil to Volumes I and III only. A Very Good set.
Scarce, particularly in the First Edition and in such a handsome binding. Rev. Richard Cecil (1748-1810) was the rector of Bisley, Vicar of Chobham in Surrey and Minister of St John’s Chapel in Bedford Row, London. As a leading Evangelical Anglican, he was associated with the progressive Clapham Sect, whose members included William Wilberforce.
