Gaskell’s final, longest, and arguably most accomplished novel follows the complex relationships of Molly Gibson, the naive only child of a widowed provincial doctor in the early 1830s. Gaskell’s sudden death in 1865 left her work unfinished and so it was completed by Frederick Greenwood. First published in monthly instalments in the “Cornhill Magazine” from 1864-1866, this edition follows the 1996 Penguin edition.
