Lindsay’s important examination of the poor in Scotland with his suggestions for improving their conditions and the growth of trade generally. He wrote from some authority being Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1729 to 1731 and again from 1733 to 1735. With chapters on “Idleness, the bad effects”, “The great advantages of suppressing theft, robbery and begging” and “Bad effects of the smuggling trade” there are also two substantial sections on the linen industry and herring fishing in Scotland. A very good copy in the original 18th century binding.
