With 14 plates, including 8 evocative etchings and a large gate-fold map of the wall on linen at end, together with an additional 131 woodcuts as called for. Bound in half maroon morocco and forest green cloth, with a gilt figural ornament to upper boards, gilt fillets; 5 raised spine bands and gilt spine titles. Cracked joints with minor wear to spine and edges. Some slight scattered foxing, mainly to fore-edges. Pages are bright and tight, all plates are present and free from tears.
John Collingwood Bruce’s seminal text on Hadrian’s Wall studies, so esteemed that it went through numerous editions and remains the primary academic guide to Hadrian’s Wall to this day. This, the second edition, is widely considered the most desirable edition, and the only one in quarto. Scarce.
