Ninth edition. Octavo, pp. vi, [2], 311, [1]. With a copper engraved, hand coloured, folding “Map of the Lakes”. In contemporary full polished calf, gilt floral ornamentation to spine compartments, five raised bands, blind-embossed spine label gilt. Upper board attached but by single cord only, rubbing to board edges. Nineteenth century ownership inscription to front paste-down “A. E. Doddington”, some toning to leaves facing map and advertisement leaf, otherwise internally a clean, bright, copy free of foxing. Very Good.
Important work on Northern travel by antiquarian Thomas West, which emphasised the Romantic aspects of the Northern landscape and established the Lakes as a major tourist destination. Written with artists in mind, it includes picaresque viewpoints for painting.
