FIRST EDITION, SECOND IMPRESSION (printed in same year as First). Octavo, pp. xii, 243, [1]. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and vignette to title page by Robert Gibbings. Finely bound by G. J. Sawyer in emerald green full morocco with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to spine, gilt bird motifs to compartments and double gilt fillet to boards; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers and gilt dentelles. Spine lightly sunned; a little light foxing to textblock edge otherwise contents clean with no annotation or inscriptions. A Near Fine copy in an uncommonly handsome binding.
 
Sir Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Falloden (1862-1933) had a long career as a Liberal statesman; he was Foreign Secretary at the outbreak of the Great War and his posts included Leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Lords and Ambassador to the United States. His off-duty pastimes included a passion for natural history,particularly ornithology; Grey was involved in the foundation of the British Trust for Ornithology, and this volume records his personal experiences and observations over a lifetime of interest in the subject.
