Publisher's salmon pink cloth with blind foliate border to boards, and gilt titles to spine and upper board. Edges sprinkled red; canary yellow endpapers. Cover cloth sunned particularly to spine; rear board lightly soiled with small black stain at joint. Edges a little rubbed; minor bump to edge of upper board. Scattered light foxing mainly to prelims otherwise a clean bright copy; no annotation or inscriptions. Autobiographical account of the life and travels of a missionary cleric in South Africa in the mid nineteenth century, with much lively descriptive detail of the country and its inhabitants. Merriman (1809-82) eventually became Bishop of Grahamstown and was defeated in a series of court cases regarding the status of the Church of Southern Africa versus the Church of England over the appiontment of bishops. Scarce.
