Octavo, pp viii, 82. 5 plates including frontispiece. Half calf with maroon calf label to spine with gilt titles; marbled paper-covered boards. Calf worn with small loss (approx 1-inch) at head of spine, wear at tail and corners. Boards bruised & scuffed with wear to edges. From the library of the Garrison at Athlone, with their library label to front pastedown and stamp to title page. Contents soiled throughout with paper repairs at hinge of frontis/title page and Plate IV/p 81. Inner front hinge a little weak; 2-inch tear to pp 71/2 without loss. A well read but serviceable copy.
Sir Joshua Jebb (1793-1863) served in the Royal Marines and the Royal Sappers and Miners; his later career included work for the Home Office connected with the design and construction of prisons like Broadmoor and Pentonville. He was the author of several works on penitentiaries as well as companion volumes “Practical Treatise on Strengthening and Defending Outposts” and “Practical Treatise on Duties at a Siege”. (ODNB).
