In 1850 the Coal Mines Inspection Act appointed inspectors reporting to the Home Office in an attempt to prevent explosions and accidents in the hazardous colliery industry and Dunn’s works reflect the contemporary concerns on the subect. Dunn was the inspector for the North of England including Northumberland and Durham and for Scotland; his own experiences at Hebburn Colliery, where 75 miners died in a flooded mine in 1815, meant that safety was one of his priorities. Scarce.
