Bound in publisher’s Persian blue cloth blocked in black on front with author’s symbol and on back with publisher’s windmill device, with gilt titles to spine. With the original publisher’s cream dust-jacket illustrated in scarlet. Scattered foxing to text-block edges else square, neat and free from ownership marks, inscriptions or annotation. Dust-jacket lightly soiled and rubbed to edges with some small nibbles and nicks to edges, free from major loss or large tears. Overall a Very Good copy in a Very Good dust-jacket. Very Good in a Very Good dust-jacket.
 
First edition with the correct issues points for the first printing as listed in Stott, e.g. “in” instead of “it” at p.181, line 4. This delicious satire of London’s inter-war Literati, originally serialised in Harper’s Magazine from March to July 1930, was Maugham’s personal favourite of all the books he had written.
