Octavo, pp., xxxvi, 321, paginated to include plates. Monochrome frontispiece with tissue guard, 35 further plates, and 4 in-text illustrations. Publisher’s royal blue cloth with gilt titles and stylised peacock heavily blocked in gilt to spine and upper board; all edges gilt with yellow peacock pictorial endpapers. Endpapers and tissue guard are lightly toned, otherwise a very clean & neat copy with only minor rubbing to spine tips; near fine condition.
 
Two novellas which showcase Peacock’s wit and satirical prowess. Maid Marian is a retelling of the Robin Hood myth, whereas Crotchet Castle is a story of wealth, greed and deception. A handsome peacock binding which is illustrated throughout by F. H. Townsend, with an Introduction by George Saintsbury.
