First Editions. Octavo, pp., 11, [1]; 11, [1]; 20; 18; 13, [1]; 20; 8 leaves of verse; 20. Photographic portrait, presumably of the author, pasted to first blank; 20 monochrome photographic illustrations to “Grand Fjords of Norway”. Pamphlets all bound with their original decorative thin card wrappers in harlequin colours. Black half-morocco with gilt titles to red spine-label; marbled paper-covered boards and matching marbled endpapers. Loss at head of spine; light wear to corners. Free end-papers worn at fore-edge; very slight scattered foxing and top edge a little dusty otherwise contents clean. A very good copy.
A rare collection of pamphlets on Cumbrian tourists in continental Europe. The Allerdale Touring Group numbered over 60 members and were based at Cockermouth in Cumbria. The club organised annual group excursions to the continent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, with Thomas Graham writing a retrospective account of each visit. Each pamphlet is an effortful production, presented with art-nouveau paper covers, and a slew of photographs to the final excursion in the Norwegian fjords. Graham’s single-sheet verses reflect his patriotic outlook, and also his interest in sport as he was an ex-president of Alnwick Bowling Club. Rare. We locate 1 copy each of the pamphlets (except for ‘A Visit to Ober-Ammergau’) at Newcastle University only.
