Small octavo, pp., 23, [1], 360, [4] Index. Bound without the plan and map of Newcastle, as is often the case. Engraved initial letters and vignette views of the town within text throughout. Publisher’s brown moire limp cloth wraps with decorative printed title onlay to upper cover. Recently re-cased to spine with purple cloth and new endpapers. Bookplate of Thomas Bell to front paste-down. Light toning to text block, particularly the edges. Minor rubbing to corners and edges otherwise a solid copy. Previously published under the title “ Richardson’s Descriptive Companion Through Newcastle...” in 1838. Moses Aaron Richardson (1793-1871), author of the 8-volume “Local Historian’s Table Book” and Newcastle printer and bookseller, produced the first printing when the British Association visited Newcastle, and this 1846 reprint was made to coincide with the Royal Agricultural Society holding its annual show in the town. With the bookplate of Thomas Bell (1785-1860), antiquarian bookseller, surveyor to the Duke of Northumberland and, with his brother John, founder member and driving force behind the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. An attractive copy in its original cloth of one of the earliest guidebooks to the town. Scarce. £65.00
