Peter Underwood (1923-2014) was often introduced by Dame Jean Conan Doyle as ‘the Sherlock Holmes of psychical research’. A parapsychologist and ghost hunter, Underwood was, at the time of publication, president of the Ghost Club (Drury, 315). The Satanist is the second of Wheatley’s occult novels featuring Molly Fountain, the first is To the Devil-A Daughter (1953).
