First edition, first printing. Octavo, pp., 447, [1]. Publisher’s original pictorial boards, lettered in red and gilt to spine, in the original unclipped Sax pictorial dust jacket. Inscribed by the author in blue ink to title-page ‘For Peter Underwood, With every kind thought from Dennis Wheatley’. Rubbing to extremities of jacket, closed tear to upper spine panel. Corners of cloth slightly bumped and rubbed, but binding otherwise square and solid. Contents clean and bright. A very good copy.
Peter Underwood (1923-2014) was often introduced by Dame Jean Conan Doyle as ‘the Sherlock Holmes of psychical research’. A parapsychologist and ghost hunter, Underwood was, at the time of publication, president of the Ghost Club (Drury, 315).
