The first British edition (we locate no other imprint), after the first American of 1887. Stapled paperback duodecimo, pp., 32. Publisher’s original pictorial colour-printed paper wraps, advertisements to lower cover.
Small closed tear (approx 1cm) to fore-edge. Light scattered foxing and toning throughout. A well-preserved example.
A Western penny novel in the Deadwood Dick Jr. series, focusing on Dick’s encounter with ‘Baby Bess the girl gold miner’, an orphaned British aristocrat who emigrated to the United States and became an Arizona gold miner. The Aldine publishing company specialised in adaptations of American dime novels. This story was first published as no. 515 in ‘Beadle’s Half-Dime Library’, before being adapted for Aldine’s ‘Boys’ First-Rate Pocket Library’. The colour-printed upper cover design is largely copied from the American black-and-white original, with numerous slight differences.
