An Answer Returned to the Letter from Legorn, by a Merchant concerned in the Ship.

Publisher: s.n., [London?];
Date of Publication: 1680
Stock Code: 15070

Folio, pp., 4, sig., A2. Alphanumeric codes in ink to recto of each leaf in a contemporary hand. Lightly foxed and toned, particularly to edges, long tear to central fold but sheet still attached, small holes from sheet registration to lower corners. A well-preserved, very serviceable copy.

A satire on the Popish Plot, which satirises Presbyterian hysteria by shifting English religious politics to the Mediterranean. Controversial and clandestine works such as this leaflet often framed their arguments as news from overseas in order both to disguise their satiric shot in the dark, and to draw parallels to religious conflicts abroad. This example is a reply to From aboard the Van-herring. A letter from Legorn, Decem. 1. 1679. An interesting artefact of English Reformation polemic, produced during the highly censorious Carolean regime.
