Very early edition in English of Sholokhov’s masterpiece, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1965. Originally published in three books in the Soviet magazine
Oktyabr between 1928-1932, this early English translation combines the first two books into a single volume. It was one of the earliest great works of Soviet literature to be translated into English. Regarded as one of the great novels of the twentieth-century, it was quickly compared to Tolstoy’s War and Peace (1867). As one contemporary review wrote ‘its colossal vitality covers the Russia of to-day as Tolstoi’s ‘War and Peace’ covered the Russia of a century ago.’ (Church, The Clarion).
