American modernist poet Louis Zukofsky (1904-1978) was a contemporary of ee cummings and Ezra Pound. He composed 80 Flowers between December 1974 and January 1978, it was published in a limited fine press edition of 80 copies in June 1978, a month after Zukofsky’s death in May 1978. Michele Leggott (1956-) is a New Zealand poet, and an emeritus professor of English at the University of Auckland. Her PhD dissertation on Zukofsky was published as Reading Zukofsky’s 80 Flowers. She traces the poems’ genesis from sources as diverse as Shakespeare’s sonnets and seed catalogs.
