Enlarged edition, after the first of 1923. Octavo, pp., xi, [3], 957, [1], plus tissue-guarded frontispiece of the poet. Polished navy-blue half-calf over blue buckram, spine on five raised bands, titled with nautical and hunting ornaments in gilt to spine; marbled end-papers. Beamish’s armorial bookplate to front paste-down. Annotated occasionally in pencil by Beamish and another unidentified annotator. Spine sunned, shelf-wear to edges, binding strong and corners sharp. Tear to foot of 221, contents clean excepting the annotations mentioned above. A very good copy.
The enlarged edition of Masefield’s collected poems, formerly owned by a British admiral, with his annotations. Rear-Admiral Tufton Percy Hamilton Beamish (1874-1951) was twice conservative M.P. for Lewes (1924-31, 1936-45). His eclectic annotations in this volume include references to other politicians (namely, Nancy Astor and Ramsay MacDonald), as well as the admiral’s view on a select few poems. Given the nautical themes of much of Masefield’s work, the brief annotations and commentary prove to be rather interesting.
