An excellent copy of the substantial textual source on the life of a British Major-General who dedicated much of his career to the abolition of slavery. Major-General Christopher Palmer Rigby (1820-85) joined the army in 1836 and served the majority of his career around the Indian Ocean. Appointed to the Zanzibar consulate, which relied heavily on the enslavement of kidnapped Africans, Rigby vigourously pursued the enforcement of the Moresby (1822) and Hamerton (1845) treaties, and the 1833 Abolition of Slavery Act. In 1860, Rigby signed the emancipation papers for 6,200 enslaved people held by British subjects in India. Rigby’s papers were edited and first published by his daughter in this volume. £400.00
