First British edition, published simultaneously with the first American. Duodecimo, pp., 148. Contemporary green full morocco; spine on five raised bands; titled and ornamented with floral and vegetal design to compartments; the same tools ornamenting the boards within gilt fillets; all edges gilt; double gilt fillets to turn-ins; binders stamp of a dragon in gilt to end. Spine and top edge of upper board sunned; binding otherwise strong, the gilt bright, the corners rather sharp. Light toning and occasional spotting but contents generally clean. A very good copy, handsomely bound.
A signed vernacular binding in Arts and Crafts style, by an anonymous binder. The distinctive floral tools to the spine and boards are reminiscent of those used by some of those used by Sarah Prideaux (c.f. Tidcombe, appendix A), and the style is in keeping with vernacular fine bindings of the turn of the century. The dragon tool to end is lovely, and the fillets to the turn-ins are not actually straight lines, suggesting the work of a so-far unidentified student, amateur, or jobbing binder.
