Alasdair James Gray (1934–2019) was a Scottish novelist, short story writer, playwright, poet and translator. The dust-jacket, endpapers and illustrations within the text are all by Gray, in his now inimitable style. This was his first collection of short stories, seven of which had been previously published in various books and periodicals.
