An account of a school trip to Wallington Hall produced entirely by a group of children at a County Durham School. The introduction to this volume states that every element of the book: from the writing, to printing, illustration, and binding, was done by 14 children (an almost even mix of boys and girls of 13-14 years of age, all credited and identified by name) at The School Press, East Council Intermediate School, Blaydon-on-Tyne. The final half-tone shows the children at work in the press room. The book is well-executed, and deploys an eclectic variety of printing and illustrative techniques and frequently bears the charming crudities of a work of juvenile bookmaking. The School Press at East Council Intermediate School was a collaborative project between the art and English departments. The School Press produced a number of bound volumes in the 1930s, with one volume of 1935 ‘Songs of Enchantment’ including an original preface by Walter de la Mare in praise of the press.
