First edition, early reissue after the first printing of 1897. Octavo, pp., xviii, 301, [1]. Publisher’s original scarlet cloth; titled in gilt to spine; gilt fillets to boards; pictorial end-papers. Top edge dusty; corners slightly rubbed but sharp; spine sunned; binding strong and square. Contents toned to edges but clean and in good order. A very good copy.
A collection of 78 accounts of supernatural happenings with commentary by Lang, ranging from weird accounts of ancient Assyrian priests to modern day poltergeists. Written as part of Lang’s burgeoning interest in psychical research, the preface asks ‘Do you believe in ghosts?" One can only answer: "How do you define a ghost?" I do believe in hallucinations… But as to whether they are ever caused by psychical influences from the minds of others, alive or dead, not communicated through the ordinary channels of sense, my mind is in a balance of doubt.’ A scarce work of supernatural investigation.
