Wanting plate to face p. 157, otherwise complete. Publisher’s original green cloth; titled in gilt to spine and upper board; floral patterned end-papers. Spine sunned; gilt to upper board a touch rubbed; corners bumped; a few light spots of soiling to cloth. Spotting to tissue-guards otherwise internally clean. A good working copy.
The important first edition of the account of Scott’s views on house and garden design. Scott wrote extensively in the architectural press on the design of middle-class houses. This was his first book ‘a detailed account of his ideas on house design and a fetchingly illustrated survey of his work’ (ODNB). Scott emphasised that the home was a refuge centred around the hearth, ornamented with designs drawn from nature. A scarce and influential work of house design.
