First Edition, second issue. Octavo, pp., 310, plus 2 pages of publisher’s advertisements to end. Publisher’s russet red cloth, gilt titles to spine and upper board. Later ownership inscription in blue ink to front free end-paper; bookseller’s blind stamp to front free end-paper. Spine sunned; binding otherwise strong and square, the corners sharp. Light scattered foxing to end-papers; the slightest of toning to edges. A very good copy.

Number 18 in the Arrowsmith 3/6 series. A charismatic and influential work of English adventure fiction, which spawned ‘Ruritarian romance’ genre. The novel has since been adapted many times, and is perhaps best known for inspiring George Macdonald Fraser’s second Flashman novel, ‘Royal Flash’.
