Volume 2 has no title-page, as issued. Publisher’s original buff buckram; titled in black to spines; vignette of Tristan on horseback in gilt, blue, green, and black to upper boards; top edges gilt; white end-papers; silk place-markers mounted to headband of each volume. Corners of volume 2 slightly bumped; cloth and gilt bright and fresh; bindings strong and square. Some plates lacking the tissue guard, some with tissue guard detached; internally clean. A very good set. A wonderfully illustrated translation of Gottfried von Strassburg’s (d. 1210) medieval courtly romance, which was a collaboration by two female medievalists. The translator, Jessie L. Weston (1850-1928) was a scholar of medieval romance, who also translated ‘Parzival’ and ‘Guingamor’. The illustrator, Caroline Watts (1868-1919), is best know for creating the iconic image of a suffragette bugler. She would contribute arts-and-crafts style illustrations to a number of Weston’s medieval translations. An attractive set. £95.00
