Second edition, with numerous additions and alterations by the author, after the first of 1827. Octavo, pp., xii, 646, plus wood-engraved illustrations within text. Library tree-pattern emerald cloth; titled and shelf-marked in gilt to spine, bound by Walter Davis (his binder’s stamp in blue ink to front paste-down); all edges sprinkled red; white end-papers. Library bookplate of the Friends’ Reading Society, Birmingham, to front paste-down, library stamp and inscription to title-page. Spine-tips rubbed with fraying and minor loss to head; corners bumped; top edge dusty; cloth bright, the binding strong and square. Toning and very light, occasional scattered foxing internally. A very serviceable copy.
Faraday’s first and only book conceived as a single entity. In early 1827, Faraday delivered a series of twelve lectures to the Royal Institution on the subject of chemical manipulation. In the same year, he adapted those lectures into this book. Faraday’s later works were anthologies of separately published papers or lectures, making this his sole monograph (ODNB).
