Publisher’s original straight-grain emerald green cloth; titled in gilt to spine and upper board; photographic vignette of a freedom fighter within black-stamped frame to upper board; white end-papers. Minor shelf wear to extremities and fore-edge of upper board; photographic vignette a touch rubbed. Internally clean and bright. An excellent copy.

A thrilling journalistic account of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO), by an American writer who illegally spent two months in Nevrokop, Eastern Macedonia with an armed band of rebels. The account details the daily life of a Macedonian revolutionary group, skirmishes against Ottoman forces, and the culture and topography of the region. The photographic plates are most often of freedom fighters, including the female rebel leader Kristina Petkova armed with sabre and rifle. The photographs taken in the heat of battle are startling survivals indeed.
