Second edition, after the first of 1877. Octavo, pp., 316, including wood-engraved frontispiece, 21 wood-engraved illustrations (many full page) and 3 plan maps. Collated and complete. Publisher’s original crimson cloth; titled in silver to spine and upper board; wood-engraved vignette mounted to upper board; white end-papers. Inscribed by the author ‘Gilbert Thomas // with kindest regards // Wentworth Huyshe’ in ink to verso of front free end-paper; Thomas’ bookplate to front paste-down, and his ownership inscription in blue ink to recto of front free end-paper; cancelled ownership stamps of Dimitri D. Dimăncescu to front paste-down and title-page. Spine dulled; silver a touch tarnished; corners lightly rubbed. Text-block cracked between ‘H’ and ‘I’ gatherings and between ‘O’ and ‘P’ gatherings, otherwise square; light toning to edges. A very good copy.
A scarce account of the emergence of Bulgaria as an autonomous state. This copy has a storied provenance. Presented by the author to one Gilbert W. Thomas (possibly the watercolourist of the late nineteenth-century?), it was later owned by Romanian diplomat, scholar, and anti-Nazi Dimitri D. Dimăncescu (1896-1984). Dimăncescu was the founder of the Romanian Scout movement, a British collaborator against Nazi influence in Romania during the Second World War, and Romania’s representative at the Paris Peace Conference of 1946. Dimăncescu wrote several histories of the region, and no doubt consulted this book when doing so.
