An account of the extensive travels of Georgiana Muir Mackenzie and Adeline Paulina Irby through the Balkans in the years 1861-64. The pair shared a mutual interest in the condition and schooling of Slavonic women and girls, and organised schooling for children in region. Irby and MacKenzie were of such significance to the education of girls in the region that they were mentioned in parliament, which led to Prime Minister William Gladstone writing a new introduction to the second edition of this book, republished here.
