Publisher’s original black cloth; titled to orange labels on spine and upper board; orange pictorial end-papers. In the original pictorial dust-jacket. Jacket in two pieces, split at hinge between spine panel and lower panel; area of loss approx 4 x 5 cm to lower panel, and some minor loss to head of upper panel. Corners a touch bumped; binding otherwise strong and square. Internally clean. A near-fine copy in good jacket. An account of colonial Malaya drawn from the author’s personal experiences of the region. Sir Hugh Clifford (1866-1941) arrived in Malaya in 1883 at the age of 17, and served in the British colonial administration there until 1902, he wrote extensively on the region, and the inner flap of the dust-jacket notes that even Joseph Conrad was astounded by Clifford’s knowledge of Malaya. The illustrator, Mahlon Blaine (1894-1969) was a prolific illustrator of the fantastical, occult, and erotic. The illustrations to this book are strikingly executed in Blaine’s inimitable style. £125.00
