First British edition, after the Philadelphia first of 1834. Two volumes. Octavos, pp., xi, [1], 403, [1]; viii, 440. Later green cloth backed with calf; titled in gilt to red morocco spine labels; white end-papers. Top edges dusty; rubbing to spines; light mottling to cloth; corners rubbed and a little rare. Occasional spotting internally but generally rather clean. A very serviceable set.
The account of naval surgeon and naturalist William Samuel Waithman Ruschenberger’s (1807-1895) travels with the Pacific Squadron around South America between 1831-34. Ruschenberger travelled through Brazil, Chile, Bolivia and Peru. He describes the customs, culture, religion, and environment of the continent.
