Duplicate manuscript borrowing list and list of rules to ‘the Newcastle Book Club’ (seemingly a church book club of local women) pasted to front. Light soiling to lower board; scuffs to binding; corners rubbed; top edge dusty; binding otherwise strong and square. Spots of toning to title-page and to plates, otherwise internally clean. A very good copy. A scarce biography of Elisabeth of Wied, first Queen of Romania (1843-1916). Elisabeth wrote under the pen name Carmen Sylva, giving the title to this volume. The book club manuscript pasted to the front as an interesting insight into women’s reading practices at the fin de siècle, providing a list of books read in 1901 (this book is number 3), and the dates named members read and received them. £85.00
