All first editions, first impressions. Dust-jackets of vols. 3, 4 and 5 price-clipped; light spotting to verso of jacket on vol. 2; spine-panel of ‘Unfinished Tales’ sunned. Top edge of vol. 5 a touch dusty; spotting to fore-edge of volume 12; a touch of rubbing to spine of vol. 9. Toning to margins of vol. 12, else internally clean and bright. Overall an excellent set, all in publisher’s original cloth with near-fine to fine dust-jackets.

A lovely bright set of first editions of Tolkien’s lore of Middle Earth. Christopher Tolkien drew the text of this vast mythology from his father’s unpublished papers. ‘‘The History of Middle Earth’ is an account of Tolkien’s vast legendarium: the body of tales, languages, geography, and other lore from which sprang ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Silmarillion’, and into which ‘The Hobbit’ ‘intruded’ (Hammond).
